MARINE MODEL MAKING

Marine models are made in all shapes and sizes from the very small ship models and very small scaled to the very large model ships and the very large scaled. The marine model maker has to start with finding his client, pricing the job and then planning the job to fit the time scale. Each business is different, ours is a company that has a team of 10 marine model makers, all of whom are experienced in their field for many years, some with as much as 26 years experience.

The Marine modelling we are most actively involved in is the display exhibition ship model which is designed to promote the product of the shipyard at the show or in the offices of the client, or their customer. Ours are of the highest standard, we feel this is essential as this reflect the quality of work the shipyards are producing, and because it is normally the first point of contact with the client it must drive the quality issue home to the customer.

Many of our clients are producers of military vessel; to this end we have many of the worlds Naval Models. The Naval Model Makers or the members of our team that enjoy Model making military vessels are about 50% of the team we employ.

Marine model making or ship model making can be in the form of test model ship that can be made for proving the form of the hull and the vessels sea worthiness. The marine model can also be used to design the aesthetics of the super structure or the interior of the cabin space.

Marine model maker is constantly challenged by the variety of the shapes and forms that he or she is asked to make. It could be a Naval Model or commercial liner. In general the materials used in making the models are the same but with different paint and decal finishes. The joy of the job is that there is constant variety so whether the they have their naval model makers hat on, or the commercial marine model makers hat on, they have an interesting job, one they execute with pride.

Each marine model is carefully constructed in a variety of materials, wood, resin, brass, tooling board, plastic sheet and paint. Once the forms have been constructed they are then checked for mistakes and how the sections fit together. Once the model has been checked the paint is applied, sometimes as many as 10 different colours. These will have to be masked and sprayed, but left to dry for at least 24 hours before the can receive another coat.

Once all the paint is applied to the model sections the marine model is ready for assembly. The marine model makers then go to work on the final stages of gluing and screwing the components together. Whether it is a naval model or a commercial marine model the components are assembled into small sub assemblies that are loaded onto the hull form section by section. If the vessel has a wheelhouse that interior is showing this is made and the clear window sections glued in place before it is set on to the marine models hull and deck structures.

The marine model is then loaded on to the wooden base and bolted down. The brass plaque is added, with name and build details. Finally there is a final check that all the components have been put in place. The model and the Perspex display case are then given a final dust and polish to ensure there are no stray pieces of material floating around inside the case and any finger marks are polished away. Then the Perspex case is set in place and the screws are inserted, securing it.

The naval model or marine model is then either bubble wrapped for delivery by our own transport. Or a flight case or shipping crate is constructed ready for collection by the shippers, delivering our models to the four corners of the world.

We pride ourselves as one of the worlds leading ship model makers, supplying some of the largest shipyards in the world. Ship model making is a skill we have practiced many years, for the results we now supply to our clients.

Each model is supplied to the highest standard. Ship model suppliers know that to deliver the goods it may take many hundreds of hours work to supply just one vessel,

It is not a product that can be rushed, and our ship model makers know this. We plan all the work and execute it in stages until the master piece is finished.
